Global demand for avocados continues to surge, firmly cementing the fruit’s place as a premium, nutrient-dense staple. - On average, only 70% of harvested avocados are packed as Class 1 or 2
- For a 15 t/ha orchard, that equates to just 10.5 t/ha of premium fruit
- The remaining 30% represents lost revenue potential
While a 70% pack-out rate is commendable (and above global averages), it still leaves significant room for improvement—particularly when margins are tight and input costs are rising.
The top 3 drivers of quality loss
According to the latest data, just three factors account for nearly 60% of all quality-related losses:
1. Wind Damage (20.9%)
Wind remains the single largest contributor to fruit loss. Physical damage from rubbing, scarring, and branch contact reduces marketability and increases downgrade rates.
2. Sunburn (20.3%)
High temperatures and intense sunlight can cause significant cosmetic and internal damage. With climate variability on the rise, sunburn is becoming an increasingly costly issue for growers.
3. Insect Damage (16.3%)
Pests continue to impact both yield and quality, with even minor damage often disqualifying fruit from premium categories.
